{name:Savy#|#picture:0}My face and arms ached like a truck just ran over me. Actually, I probably would have been better off if a truck ran over me. I would have prefered it. At least then I would have been dead or in a hospital in a coma instead of dealing with what I've been going through. I had a dark black ring around my left eye and at least three bruises starting to form on my arms, and people around me stopped and stared as I tried to make my way home as if nothing was wrong, which was proving to be a very hard task to accomplish. Before I know it, I'd be the next act at the circus. I could hear the ring master calling out to the crowd now. Come one and all to see the black and blue girl! First comers get in for free to see the freak! Just as I was beginning to think I'd never get home without someone phoning the police, I was at the doors to our shabby old apartment complex. Seemed like everything in New York was shabby nowadays. After much effort on getting up the three flights of stairs, I was able to get into our flat as quietly as I could. Or at least I thought. "Where've you been?" came the voice of the one person I didn't want to see me in this condition. My brother. "Out," I mumbled, trying to think of a way to make a run for my room, but there was no way around him.

{name:Aaron#|#picture:1}I'd been in the flat all day, alone, just watching a basketball game on our old television. The sound was tinny and fuzzy black lines rose up the screen every ten seconds, but it was better than nothing. Both of my parents were at their jobs and Savy had gone out before I'd even woken up that morning and she'd been gone for a while. Too long a while. Just as I was worrying, the door creaked open and I could hear Savy creeping through the hall. Tearing my eyes away from the television screen, I got up and made me way to the front door, wondering what had kept Savy so long. She was standing at the door, her eyes looking at the floor in an unusual manner. 'Savy?' I asked, my voice suspicious, 'Where've you been?' 'Out,' She mumbled, still not looking up. 'Out where?' I asked, take a few steps closer to her, 'Is something the matter?' 'No, nothing.' 'Savy you really are a terrible -' I began, putting a hand under her chin and lifting her face towards me. The rest of that sentence was lost somewhere, because the sight of Savy's face left me speechless. She had a large black and blue mark all around her eye and not the sort of mark you can get from being clumsy and falling over. 'Savy,' I gasped, 'What - what happened?'

{name:Savy#|#picture:0}"Nothing!" I snapped and swatted his hand away from my face. I was usually better at hiding these sort of things. All I had to do was put on a long sleeve shirt and long jeans and I could hide any bruises that might be on me that day. But seeing as I had a large black eye on my face, no long sleeve shirt was going to cover that up. Unless I put on a blindfold, but then I would probably just hurt myself even more than I already have. "Savy, what happened?" He asked more serious this time. He was practically staring me down with suspicious eyes. "I said nothing! I- Someone just threw a ball at me and it hit my eye," I said thinking of the first thing that came to mind and looked back to the floor. "Savy, don't lie to me." Just then, as if my prayers were answered, a knock came at the door behind me, and I didn't hesitate to swing around and pull the door open. Anything to avoid Aaron, I would take. "Georgie!" I said, more than happy to see my best friend standing in front of me.

{name:Georgie#|#picture:2}-GAME OVER- Those were the words that had flashed across my television screen, I threw the game controls to the floor in anger. Stupid rayman. I sighed and looked around my small apartment, there was nothing else to do here. Hmm, what if Savy were home? Well checking wouldn't do any harm and I had left one of mittens there anyway, I opened my door and skipped across the hall to her apartment. I was just about to knock on her door when I saw that it was open slightly and heard voices inside. It was Aaron and Savy.. were they arguing? I wasn't really an eavesdropper but I couldn't really help overhearing, I listened harder (unintentionally, of course) and seemed that Savy was trying to get away or something like that. I decided to knock anyway and seconds later, there was Savy. I did a double take as I saw Savy's face. Her right eye was surrounded with a large, ugly looking bruise. Since when had Savy taking up boxing? "Hey Savy! Hey Aaron!" I chirped, looking at Aaron who was watching with narrowed eyes. I turned to look back at Savy and she had that sort of pleading look on her face. "Um, I came round to see if Savy wanted to come round to mine? I've just bought this new manicure set, you see.." "Yes, let's go!," she cried and bolted out of her apartment and over to my door. I looked back at Aaron, "Erm, bye then," and quickly shut the door. I walked back into my own apartment, to see that Savy was sitting on my sofa and looking down at the floor. I went and sat next to her, "So are you going to tell me about what happened to your face?" I asked her, "It's got nothing to do with Troy, has it?"

{name:Aaron#|#picture:1}Damn it. Georgie had to show up, right there and then, didn't she? Savy knew I wouldn't demand an answer out of her if Georgie was there, and if I didn't get any answer out of Savy now, I never would. My hands curled into fists just at the thought of someone laying a finger on my sister. Who would do that? It wasn't like Savy not to tell me about her life, not like she used to. She couldn't have been hanging about with half the estate for all I knew, and it was a rough estate. It could've been anyone. I rubbed my forehead, confused and angry. I had to know who had done it, I had to make them pay. But I couldn't, I just couldn't, go marching across the hall and demanding an answer from her. Not infront of Georgie. I suddenly had an idea. Maybe Georgie coming over, despite how bad the timing, wasn't such a bad thing. Maybe it was the best thing that could have happened in the situation. They'd been best friends since I could remember, and if Savy was going to confess anything, she'd confess it to Georgie. They were probably discussing it right now, details and all. And if I wanted an answer, I would have to get it myself. Though my mind was telling me it was wrong, I still managed to walk myself to Georgie's door. Georgie had left the door slightly open, something she did all the time. I could hear their muffled voices already. I pressed my ear right up against the wood of the door, concentrating so hard that I could hear them clearly, give or take a word. 'It's got nothing to do with Troy, has it?' I heard Georgie's familar tone ask. Troy? What did he have to do with it? I didn't know him very well, but I knew him well enough to know he wasn't the kind of guy I could see Savy getting along with. He was nice and all, but sometimes when I'd seen him in the street, he'd looked pretty tense, on edge. 'Yes,' I heard Savy reply, her voice breaking, 'It's been going on for ages now -' That was all I needed to hear. I pushed myself away from the door, unable to think straight from the anger. It was like nothing I'd felt before. I'd always been protective over Savy but this was a whole new level. You've got to give that guy what's coming to him, a voice in my head said, you won't let him get away with this. I knew there was a gun in dad's sock drawer. He'd told me it would kill any bird flat out, as long as you aimed right. So it would hurt a nasty piece of work like Troy, right? I went to the parent's room, snatching the gun from underneath piles of clean socks. It was small, small enough not to be seen under a jacket anyway. I rubbed my head, before slamming the flat door and began to race down the flights of stairs.

{name:Savy#|#picture:0}"It's got nothing to do with Troy, has it?" Georgie asked, sitting herself down next to me. There was no putting it past her. Aaron was easier to keep it from than she was. It was like she could read my thoughts. Of course, I'd told her that he'd hit me before, but she didn't know the half of it. For all she knew he'd only hit me once. I had to tell her the truth. "Yes, its been going on for ages now; at least a month," I muttered looking at the floor. "Savy,"she breathed. "You need to tell the authorities about him." "You don't think I've tried? Georgie, he's threatened me not to tell; him and his gang," I choked and finally looked up at her, but when I did so, something out the door caught my eye. It looked like a streak of....blonde hair. "Aaron," I whispered. "Huh?" I heard Georgie say, but I was already up and running to the door. I swung it open just in time to see Aaron sprinting down the stairs with something in his hand. I only had a small glimpse of what it was, but from what I saw, it looked like- oh no. Georgie was at my side by now, but before she could say anything I was running into our apartment and into our parents' room. Our dad had told us of a pistol he kept in his sock drawer and told us to use it for emergencies only. If Aaron had what I though he had, then that would be where he would have got it. Sure enough, when I ran into the room, the drawer was open with socks scattered everywhere. The gun was gone. "Georgie!" I yelled running back out into the hall. "He took it! Georgie, he took it!" "He took what? What's going on?" She asked wide eyed. "Aaron! He- he was listen to us! He knows where the bruises are from! And- and he has my dad's gun!" I yelled. "What?! Well, what should we do?" "Follow him! If he heard us and he has Dad's gun, then he's going after Troy! We need to stop him!" I said already running down the stairs. "How're we supposed to do that?" She shouted from behind me. "I don't know, but if we don't, both Troy and Aaron are going to be killed," I said before the both of us jumped out the door and sprinted after him.

{name:Georgie#|#picture:2}It all happened really fast and it took a couple of minutes to process everything that had happened. Aaron had taken a gun and had possibly gone to finish Troy off. Oh dear. Me and Savy sprinted towards another shabby complex, supposedly where Troy lived. I had never been around here before, so I just followed Savy. She stopped at one of the buildings and ran through the door and up a flight of stairs until we reached a door that said, "17B." I leaned forwards, putting my hands on my legs and trying to catch my breath as Savy pounded on the door, screaming Aaron's name.

{name:Aaron#|#picture:1}I knew exactly where I was going. The estate was small and having lived in the same place my whole life, I knew it better than the back of my hand. All I'd have to do was go to Troy's, confront him about all this. I wasn't doing anything too bad, not after he'd been whacking my sister for so long. Yes, I had a gun, but all I'd need to do was scare him away, stop him from ever seeing Savy again.
Troy lived in an apartment complex not too far from my own, but the building made even me feel nervous. It was a large building, with boarded windows and graffiti designs spread all over the walls. There was a sign above the main door saying 'Fairhill Apartment Complex' but all the vowels had fallen off and someone had scrawled, 'Liam woz ere 2k8' underneath it which ruined the general effect. Most of the its residents were ex-convicts, or part of gangs. The type of people you cross the road from. I tried to ignore all the stories about the place and focus on what I was here for. I rushed through the doors and up one set of stairs, stopping at the door that I knew belonged to Troy. I took a deep breath, wondering how the hell I was going to talk to Troy about it all without hitting him first, how I'd even be able to control my temper when he opened the door to me. I banged on the door, hoping I could keep myself calm just for a few minutes. 'Alright, I'm coming,' Troy's voice shouted from inside the flat and seconds later he was at the door. 'Oh, Aaron,' He said, looking at me like I was the last person he would expect to see, 'Don't see you here round here that often.' 'No,' I said, forcing myself to smile, 'I need to talk to you. About my sister. 'Oh,' He said, looking uncomfortable, 'Look whatever she's said to you man, we just had a small argument..' 'That gives you the right to hit her, then?' I snarled, unable to believe he thought he could weasel out of it. 'You must know what girls can be like! Maybe I've got a temper problem..' He said, looking panicked now. 'Yeah, I've got a temper problem too.' I growled, pulling my arm back and hitting him in the face with all my strength. He fell backwards, looking suddenly mad. The force of it had made my own fist hurt more than anything, but I knew it was worth it. He would knew how it felt for once. Troy was still on the floor when the door started banging and I could here Savy yelling my name. I growled once more, I didn't need her here, she'd just try to prevent things. A second later, the door had smashed open, most likely from the strength of somebody's foot. Georgie was with Savy, then. Savy came running clumsily into the room, screaming at me not do anything irrational. Georgie stood not to far behind, her eyes widened with terror at Troy lying on the floor. 'You!' Troy managed to yell, stumbling to a standing position, 'You had to open your big mouth didn't you, idiot?' 'I -' Savy began, her whole body trembling. 'Just go, Savy. You don't have to explain yourself to him anymore,' I said, still watching Troy with a look of disgust. 'It's not like you can do anything about it. I know people. People who could kill both of you and your little friend there, easy as anything,' Troy said, standing up, 'Come on, Aaron, you know what girls are like. Nothing like controlling them with your fist every now and then.' That was it. I snapped, my instincts coming before what my mind was telling me, what was right. It was all over before I could think about it. In seconds I'd whipped that gun out and pulled the trigger. It had hit Troy right in the chest, and he stumbled down, falling to the floor with a crash. His whole body went stiff and lifeless, not the way a living, breathing person would be. And all I could think was, oh shit.

{name:Savy#|#picture:0}Georgie had managed to break the door open with her foot, and I immediately stumbled into the room. Much to my horror, Troy was already on the floor with Aaron standing next to him, his fists balled. "Aaron stop! Please don't do anything irrational," I said, taking a step closer, but I looked down at Troy and our eyes met. Next thing I knew he was back on his feet, fury flaming in his eyes. 'You! You just had to open your big mouth didn't you, idiot?' He bellowed. I was used to him yelling at me, but this time I found myself more scared than I've ever been before. "Troy, I-" I stuttered, but was quickly interrupted by Aaron. The fear inside of me must have block out any noise for I didn't hear a word either of them said until a very loud bang echoed around us, making both me and Georgie scream. Aaron had pulled the gun out of his jacket, and Troy was back on the ground, a circle of blood forming on his shirt where the bullet hit. "Aaron! What'd you do?" I screamed. I ran over to him and yanked the gun out of his outstretched hand before throwing it across the room. His face was all white and looked as if he'd just seen a ghost. I could imagine my face looked the exact same as I looked back at Troy laying motionless on the ground. A pool of blood was now running underneath him and his eyes were wide open. I had to look away quickly though from the sickening feel rising in my stomach. "What have you done?" I said looking back at Aaron and shaking him slightly, but before he could say anything, the sound of voice could be heard from downstairs and my head snapped in the direction of the door. Troy's gang. I recognized their voices immediately. "He better be up there, or we came over here for nothing," came Johnny's voice, the idiot of the group. Then there was Vinni, Troy's right hand man. "He wasn't at the meeting place so he must be here," he said with that familiar scruffy voice. "What about Savy's place?" "You kidding? He'd never go there." "Oh yeah." I looked back at Aaron and Georgie with wide frightful eyes. "We've got to get out of here now," I said quietly so only they could hear me.

{name:Georgie#|#picture:2}"Come on then!" I whispered to them both, running out the apartment and standing by the door waiting for Savy and Arron and then looking at Troy's bloody body before I quickly shut the door. We were about to make it down the stairs before we heard their voices growing louder as they climbed the stairs. Damn. My eyes scanned the whole corridor quickly and they rested on a fire escape. "Quickly!" I hushed them towards the fire escape and pushing Savy forwards it, she climbed through and down the narrow, black ladder. Aaron followed and just as the guys were arriving at the top, I disappeared through the window and down the stairs. Just as we were near the ground, I heard crys of outrage and fury. I gulped.

{name:Aaron#|#picture:1}Georgie was quick to act when Troy's gang came. I was shaking, feeling sick from what I'd just done. I'd never thought I was a violent person, I always thought I knew the different between right and wrong. Yet, I'd committed murder. In a matter of seconds, I'd gone from a normal teenage boy with his whole life ahead of him to a criminal, a killer. Georgie, the genius that she was, had managed to find a fire escape. We'd be able to get out quietly, but then what? Troy said he knew people. He was part of a gang, for god's sake. You didn't want to be enemies with a gang, not in this estate. There'd been countless attacks and murders here, so much so that nobody flinched at the story of another life lost. And now I'd gone and murdered a member of a gang.. well I was a dead man walking. They'd find out it was me eventually. 'Quickly!' Georgie exclaimed, just as Savy disappeared through the firescape. I did as I was told, forcing myself down the ladder, unsure of what I was really doing. I just felt suddenly detached from everything. I could hear angry voices above and I saw a look on Georgie's face that made me think how bad it was that she'd been dragged into it. She was just a kid still, but then again weren't we all?

{name:Savy#|#picture:0}I felt like screaming at the top of my lungs at that moment. What could possibly make this situation any worst than what it already was? Troy was more than likely dead, I was sure that his gang would find out it was us eventually, and worst of all, my brother was now a murderer. He had killed a person and there was no going back in time to stop it. The one person in my life that I never ever would have thought to have killed a man had did just that, and Georgie and I somehow got caught up in it aswell. All of us were involved in it, not just Aaron, and there was nothing we could do about it. The three of us were now in an alleyway from where the fire escape came down. Except I wouldn't exactly call it a fire escape now; more like a crime scene escape. The angry yells could still be heard from above us until I looked up and just about died from horror. There, in the window that we had just come out of, was a face staring down at me, and not just a face, an enraged face. It was Vinni's. "Savy!" He bellowed. "I knew it was you! You and your little friends!" By now the others with Vinni had joined him at the window. There were at least four of them, but no where near how many there really were in his gang. All of them had a look of shock on their faces at first before turning into pure rage. "You're dead now!" Vinni yelled before pulling out his handgun from his leather jacket. "Run!" I yelled at the other two, but before he had a chance to pull the trigger, the sound of police sirens could be heard coming towards the building. Someone else in there must have called the cops when Aaron shot Troy. "We'll find you, Savy! You be sure of that, and when we do, I'll make sure you and your pals down there are dead!" He yelled for the last time before their faces disappeared, more than likely to flee from the police, which we needed to be doing right now. "Guys, we've got to get out of here!" I said, watching the end of the alley that led to the street incase the police starts coming after us.

{name:Georgie#|#picture:2}"Where do we go!?" I asked, appalled. My whole life had been completely turned over in a couple of minutes. All because of a god damn bullet. I took a few deep breaths and closed my eyes, "We need to get out of here now. We should go home and collect some things." I said calmly, opening my eyes and looking at them both. "Let's get far away from here as possible and then call a cab" I said nervously, as I bit my lip, "We can't go back home though, I don't think anyway." They both nodded glumly and we turned and ran from the complex, a horrible sick feeling growing in my stomach, I refused to feel guilty about this even though my best friend's brother had just killed a man, we would work this out somehow. As soon as we had made safe distance between us and the.. corpse, I pulled out my cell phone and dialled for a cab telling where for them to come and pick us from. In less than half an hour, we practically leaped out of the cab and into our own complex, climbing the stairs two at a time and fetching things from our apartments. Clothes, toothbrush, stuff like that. I crossed my lounge quickly, passing my television and looked at my rayman game. It was weird to think that less an two hours ago, I was sitting there playing it, without a care in the world apart from dirty laundry and late homework. I turned away and grabbed my key from the counter and walked out, locking my door behind me and waiting for Aaron and Savy out in the hall.

{name:Savy#|#picture:0}I didn't say a word to either of them the entire rest of the way home. My whole world seemed to crumbled to little tiny bits the moment the trigger of Dad's gun was pulled. Nothing could have stopped this day from being the worst in my entire life. Worse than the day I broke my arm when I was seven, worse than when I got lost as Disney World, and even worse than the first time Troy hit me. I could feel my insides tearing away with every waking minute. The cab dropped us off in front of our apartment complex and we all raced up the stairs and into our own apartments to collect our stuff. Our parents were still gone to work and I wondered what they were doing. They were probably having a leisurely day, completely unaware that their son was now a murderer and that their children had to flee the city. Once Aaron and I were inside, I thought it best to write a note to them saying we were leaving. I found a little notepad and pencil in the kitchen and started to scribble on the paper.
Dear Mom and Dad, By the time you read this, both Aaron and I will have left. We don't know where we're going, but we have to get out of town. I'm sure in time, you'll find out why, but for now I don't want to say. But we want you to know that we love you and always will no matter what. Please don't call the police. We'll be fine and hopefully we'll see you again soon.
All our love, Savy and Aaron
"What's that?" Aaron asked from behind me. "A note to Mom and Dad," I mumbled, tearing the paper off the pad and sticking it to the little fridge. I didn't say anything more to Aaron as I rummaged around my room, collecting the things I wanted to take like the necessities and other little items like a photo of our family and my first stuffed animal that I carried with me everywhere as a kid. I was just walking out the room when I noticed the TV was still on in the living room, and from what I could tell, it was the local new report. "Breaking News has just come in," the news anchor said as I approached the small screen. "The body of 18-year-old, Troy Hamilton, was just found dead in an apartment on the northside after a passerby heard gunshots coming from the building." "Aaron!" I yelled and got down on my knees in front of the television. He came running into the room, his eyes immediately resting on the screen. "Hamilton was found with a gunshot wound in his chest, police believe, just minutes after the crime. Investigators are on the case and they tell Channel 12 News that a gun was found at the scene of the crime which is being transported to a investigation lab for DNA testing. That is all we have on the story at the moment. Tune in for more on the investigation soon." "Shit," I mumbled still staring at the screen as a commercial for acne cream started. "It's all my fault. They're going to find out it was us because of me. I threw the gun to the floor and l left it there. Now the police are going to be after us too." "Savy, it wasn't your fault. I probably would have done the same mistake," he said, putting a hand on my shoulder. "But you didn't. I did." "Come on, Georgie'll be waiting for us. I got some money for us from Dad's stash in his closet. Do you have your things?" I nodded meekly and pushed myself up off the ground before following him out the door to our apartment with one last look at the life I've been living for the past 16 years. Georgie was already waiting for us outside her door when we got out and together we walked down the steps. "Where will we go?" Georgie asked looking at Aaron. "I don't know, but it'll have to be somewhere far away." We walked out the door to the building and onto the streets of New York City with no plan of where we were going or what we were to do. And then I remembered something. It was my birthday today.
